I truly believe the best ideas happen during those precious months of mat leave. Case in point – Kara. While on parental leave with her littlest, Kara got the entrepreneurial bug. She had been leading the small business marketing department at TELUS for eight-plus years. Now, she’s the one building a business. This fall she teamed up with her cousin and launched Little White Sneakers, a Toronto-based online marketplace that helps parents buy and sell their kids’ gently-used high quality clothes.
The inspiration – her eldest daughter’s cute white sneaks that were worn a total of three times. Yep, we’ve all been there.
Entrepreneurship has been a wild ride, as she explained on Emily D Photography (Em took her photos at Evergreen Brick Works.) But most importantly the new biz has her spending more time with her family. This is what the mom-of-three loves about Toronto with and without Kids in TOw.
Favourite hood
I love Davisville Village. I love the fact that we rarely use our car and can walk to so many amazing shops (Wish List), parks (Sherwood) and cafes (Lit or Café Jules.)
Keep Mom Sane
Working out! I do a bootcamp with a bunch of great moms in the neighbourhood. It is great way to get a little sweat and social time together. I am also very reliant on coffee and wine.
Best place to visit as a family
The Island! It is a little nostalgic for me as I rowed competitively in high school out of Hanlan’s point just off of Cherry Beach. We have started a new tradition on Father’s Day where we rent a boat from Harbourfront and cruise around the Harbour and then have a picnic on the Island.
Perfect day alone
I love the running paths and ravines. A nice long run up the belt line followed by a giant latte and reading the paper at one of my favourite cafés. Next, a little stroll around looking at shops followed by dinner in a place like the Distillery District. Perfect!
