Think of it as a picnic in a parking lot.

This month my family headed down to BMO Stadium to join our fellow Argos fans for some pre-game fesitivities. It’s called tailgaiting, a common and super popular at NFL games in the States, but a new party offering launched last year by the Toronto Argonauts.

We are much less about beer and cars and more into bringing out our inner football fan and supporting the local team. There were tons of jersey-clad families gathered on lawnchairs and coolers at the back of their vehicle sizzling up up hotdogs on a portable grill.

No BBQ in TOw? No problem. There are food trucks and seating on-site in front of a live DJ. We were total newbies and came pretty much empty-handed but we had fun strolling the lot, meeting fans and playing some free games of big-sized versions of Connect 4, Jenga and bean bag toss. The vibe is friendly and fun.

Just want to stop in? You can park elsewhere or commute by TTC/bike and head over on foot.

TRIP TIPS

Getting there: BMO Stadium is on the exhibition grounds, south of the Lakeshore. Tailgating is in Ontario Place Lot #2.

Low-down: Tailgating with the Argos is in a licensed area. (There are 250 spots.) You cannot bring your own booze in but you can bring a portable BBQ. Beer and other drinks are for purchase. Just in case people are in a real party-party spirit, all cars are given a white card to put on your dash in case you need to leave the car overnight.

Tailgate parking passes must be pre-purchased $30, a limited number will be retained for purchase by the general public on a game by game basis. Tailgate will open four hours prior to kickoff on weekend games & three hours prior on all other games.
