What brings you down to Toronto’s Waterfront?
Usually it’s ferrying across to Toronto Island or crossing TOwn on bike along Queen’s Quay. But most recently it was a winter walk that brought us down to the icy shores of Lake Ontario to check out Ice Breakers, a new temporary public art exhibition by Waterfront BIA and Winter Stations.
The series of five large-scale public art installations, presented by PortsOntario, are on display until February 24, 2019 along the stretch from Harbourfront Centre to HTO Park West.
Now in its third year, Ice Breakers features four installations chosen from an international design competition, plus one by Ryerson University. The theme – Signal Transmission – touches on data, digital and analog communications and how humans and other species speak.
It’s playful, instagrammable and your kids in TOw will have fun running around, under and through them.
Here’s a peek at some of the sights:
TRIP TIPS:
Getting there: You can reach Queens Quay by car, TTC, bike, foot and boat – all the details here.
Low-down:It’s free and runs until February 24, 2019. It’s an easy walk for little legs between all five installations, plus a few tall ships and airplanes overhead from the Island Airport that will pique their interest in between. We recommend either at the east end at Connector(in front of We Brew Café/ Harbourfront Centre) or the west end Tweeta-Gate (in HTO Park West). It’s an 11-minute walk end-to-end.
Snacks: Here is a list of places to eat.
In the hood: Harbourfront Centre and its Natrel Rink (with daily skating and DJ Skate Nights on Saturday nights until Feb 16th), the Power Plant and walking distance to the CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada.
