The little rink that popped up this winter in front of Union Station is one of the newest places to lace up downtown Toronto.
And it’s worth the whirl.
Located literally in front of the main entrance of Union Station, the cozy outdoor rink offers free public skating daily until January 4, 2020 (weather dependent; closed December 25.) Part of TD Union Holiday, it is an easy pit stop on your commute to meet up with friends for a short skate or a fun destination via subway with your kids in TOw.
The day I stopped by, the ice was pretty busy with people of all ages and skating abilities out for a glide. There is music, loads of seating along the boards and for newbies, lots of learn-to-skate plastic things. For those totally new to the ice, there are free daily skating lessons at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
TRIP TIPS:
Getting there: The rink is along Front St. just east of the main entrance.
Low-down: Daily skating 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Sun – Wed; 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Thur – Sat. Free skate and helmet rentals (one-hour) – or bring your own skates.
In the hood: The Hockey Hall of Fame is five minutes away on foot. Also in the hood, Berczy Park (big fountain with the dog sculptures), St. Lawrence Market, the Museum of Illusions and St. James Park.
Happy skating T.O.!
