We are so lucky how summer lingers in Toronto. But even when the fall air begins to settle in, we’ll be saying hello to sweater weather and staying outdoors to enjoy all the city has to offer. Here are 10 activities to fill your fall:
- GO PLAY IN THE STREETS: Open Streets Toronto is hosting its final massive street party along Bloor and Yonge streets on Sunday, September 16 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. It’s a day to take over the streets on anything but cars and take in dance classes, musical performances, street games and more.
2. APPLE PICKING: As peach season ends, apple season begins and there are so many orchards a short drive out of the city. Go big at Chudleigh’s in Halton Hills or small and organic at Organics Family Farm in Markham.
Trip tip: Chudleigh’s Summer Cider Nights and its line-up of live outdoor music on Fridays from 4:00 – 7:30 p.m. has been extended into September and October.
3. FARM IN THE CITY: Riverdale Farm is open year-round and free for the wandering. There are farm animals and trails to keep the little ones busy and outdoors. Check their website for daily farm demos in the Lower Francey Barn.
Mark your calendars: The Riverdale Farm Festival is on September 8-9, 2018, boasting a corn roast, corn shucking, hog/chicken calling, wheelbarrow racing, cow flap tossing and meet-the-farmer demos.
March your calendars: Most of the city’s farmers markets continue until end of October. Here is a list of them by day.
4. GET CULTURED: Visit a new hood and take in the sounds, smells and tastes from around the world. There are some super festivals taking over Toronto neighbourhoods this fall: The Toronto Ukrainian Festival on Bloor Street West (September 15-16), the Toronto Polish Festival on Roncesvalles (September 15-16) and Day of the Dead celebrating Latin American culture at Evergreen Brick Works (October 28).
5. WATCH THE SALMON RUN: Head down to the city’s ravines and rivers to catch a glimpse of the salmon moving upstream. Check out this post for five areas you might catch them in action.
Mark your calendars: You can join the Toronto Region Conservation Authority for the Salmon Festival on September 30 in Morningside Park.
6. BIRD WATCHING: Hop on your bike or set out on foot to explore Tommy Thompson Park (aka The Spit) in Toronto’s east end. Check out the event schedule for free Bird Walks.
7. READ OUTSIDE: The annual outdoor book fest Word on the Street is back on September 22 at Harbourfront Centre.
8. EXPLORE THE RAVINES: Take a ride down the lower Don Trail and check out these stops for families.
Mark your calendars: Todmorden Mills hosts a free Harvest Festival Festival on Sunday, September 23 from 12-4 p.m.
9. HARVEST TIME: In the city, Toronto Botanical Gardens is a beautiful spot to wander with kids in TOw in old day. Join them on The annual Harvest Day Celebration is on Saturday, September 22 when kids can help harvest vegetables. Hit the road for pumpkin picking, corn mazes and more outdoor fun at Brooks Farm, Downey’s Farm or Forsythe Farm.
10. PUMPKIN PARADES: November 1stis the annual Pumpkin Parades where your jack-o-laterns are retired at parks across the city. Find your nearest gathering here: http://pumpkinparades.ca
