Oh, it feels good to be back.
It’s been almost two years since we visited a museum or gallery. As I looked back at our wanderings, our last exhibition visits were the Illusions: The Art of Magic at the AGO (March 2020) and Bloodsuckers: Legends to Leeches at the ROM (December 2019) <GASP>
Well, here we are December 2021, masked up and ready to explore!
It was the bugs at the Ontario Science Centre that brought us out. Nope, not the cold and flu virus kind, but the crawling, flying, fluttering little creatures. Opened earlier this fall (and on until April 22, 2022), Bug Lab features a series of seven large bug habitats – dome-like structures that you walk into to explore and learn about the fascinating abilities and unique strengths of a certain species. Each section is packed with engaging interesting facts ranging from the incredible flying abilities of the dragonfly to the venom producing jewel wasps.
It’s really a feast for the eyes!
The exhibition was created by New Zealand’s national museum Te Papa. The massive immersive pods are super well done. And no wonder – the museum partnered with the Weta Workshop, the Academy Award®-winning shop, the company that produced the props for the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
The exhibition is crawling with so much information and the larger-than-life models really help bring the facts to life.

There were a few fun features we really liked:
- All the creatives in TOw, will love learning how to make origami butterflies and shoot them up a mini wind tunnel (similar to the one that’s in the Science Centre’s lower galleries.)
- For the littles in TOw, there is a small slide!
- There is an activity where you can test your speed — are you as fast as an orchid mantis? (I made it past slug to butterfly level – Dad in TOw managed spider speed.)

Getting there: All you need to know about getting there.
Parking: Two parking lots. $5 members; $10 non-members.
Getting in: Admission but if you plan to revisit go with membership. The Science Centre is part of the Toronto Public Library’s Museum + Arts Pass program.
