Whether it’s visiting the old faves or discovering the new, we couldn’t be happier to get back to outdoor playing. Our season’s first stop — Pirate Park, aka the playground at Cherry Beach Sports Fields. Opened in 2008 by Waterfront Toronto in partnership with the City of Toronto and the Toronto Port Lands Company, the play space is really the side show for the main attraction — two state-of-the-art turfed soccer and lacrosse fields.
We especially love this park during spring and fall, as it gets quite hot (almost no shade) in the dead of summer. Plus, you have a better chance of hitting a time when it isn’t permitted for a practice or game. Be it a soccer ball or a kite, enjoy these amazing fields.
TRIP TIPS:
Getting there: Located at 115 Unwin Ave south of Lakeshore Blvd in between Cherry St and Leslie St. If driving, there is lots of paid parking onsite. ($0.75 per half-hour; $3 for a six-hour period.) We have yet to find legal free parking. On TTC, the 72 Pape bus gets you to Commissioners St. On bike, it’s along the Waterfront Trail.
What’s there: Big wooden pirate ship (two steering wheels) and smaller ship (with sandbox). Slides, swings, a climbing structure and teeter totters. Mostly on wood chips but some spongy ground as well.
Bathrooms: Yes, with baby change table and water fountain north of fields, east of playground. Scheduled to open from May 1 – Oct 31st; 7:30 am to 9 pm daily. Currently port-a-potties.
More play: Head to Cherry Beach for some more exploring.
