What’s for lunch?
A big platter of Texas BBQ.
The boys and I took dad in TOw for a belated birthday lunch at Adamson Barbecue – one of Toronto’s most sought spots for Central Texas-style BBQ. The lunch-time restaurant is tucked away in an industrial park in Leaside.
We went on the stormiest spring day, thinking it would be quiet. No such luck, eager eaters were lined up in the rain before opening at 11 a.m. (Tuesday to Saturday.) Turns out, we went at the busiest time – take note, that’s Saturday at 11 a.m. But going early is key. It’s only open til 2 p.m., but as food is cooked day-of, they serve until sold out – which happens.
This was a rare moment when you’ll see my husband and kids waiting in line for food. But it was WELL worth the wait. If your kids in TOw are meat-eaters, there is plenty to choose from and not all of the spicy BBQ kind. Meals are served from one family-style platter. Around our table, brisket was the hands-down favourite.

TRIP TIPS:
Getting there: Adamson Barbecue is on Wicksteed Ave east of Laird and south of Eglington Ave. There’s a small parking lot in front of the building. No street parking along Wicksteed Avenue – legal free parking one street north on Research Road. (5 minute walk.)
Pre-order: You can skip the line by pre-ordering online. $100 minimum, three days notice required.
Kid-friendly: Nothing catering to kids other high chairs available. There are big rolls of paper (for wrapping leftovers) which your kids could probably draw on. Bring your own crayons.

Veggie options: Well, you aren’t going to find a lot here. You might want to leave your vegetarian friends at home. But if they decide to take one for the team (like me), then they have some sides (coleslaw, cornbread) and desserts (there was key lime pie when we were there) to snack on.
Cups and cutlery: The food is served on big metal trays – no plates and only plastic cutlery and disposable cups for soft drinks. Next time, we’ll be bringing our own picnic camping gear.
In the hood: Ontario Science Centre and Playground Paradise are a short drive east. Toronto Botanical Garden north along Leslie St. Skyzone Toronto, indoor trampoline park, a very short drive south.
