Redpath Waterfront Festival

Toronto’s Waterfront just gets better and better. One of its best features – free festivals. The annual Redpath Waterfront Festival takes to the lake this weekend (starting Fri, June 20 until Sun, June 22) with two extreme water sports, plus a whole lot of kid-friendly activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Where to go with Kids in TOw:

Kids Zone: Head to H2O Park for canoes rides, bouncy castles, treasure hunts, ship tours and sailing, plus some Caribbean flair via Harbourfront Centre. (Some activities require tickets.)

Flying guys: Thirty-two professional Flyboard pilots from around the world take over Harbour Square Park for the 2014 Flyboard North American Championship. You’ll see flips, supermans and dolphin dives among the tricks. The finals followed by the costume show (the flyboarders apparently get dressed up in themed outfits) are on Sunday. There is premium viewing at the Beer/Wine Garden (admission to that area is $10, children 10-and-under are free.)

Daredevil dogs: Dubbed “the fasted growing sport on four legs,” the DockDogs has over 100 dogs competing in Big Air, Extreme Vertical and Speed Retrieve in an above-ground doggie pool at Sherbourne Common South. This is the World Qualifying Championship. Yeah, really. And there is going to be some of the record-holders there. You can even bring your own dog on the dock after the competition to see how they measure up ($15 per dog).

TRIP TIPS:

Getting there: We say take public transit or bike or walk down. There is paid parking if you wish to navigate the mess along Queen’s Quay. Check out Waterfront’s festival map to plan your stops. More info of getting there here.

Food: Tons of restaurants and tons of space for picnicking.

Adult time: So if you can leave the kids at home, Sugar Beach is also hosting Toronto’s Wine & Beer Festival and the Sweetness Pride Beach Party.
